Sheffield Local Optometric Committee

PEARS SCHEME and Medication requests

Following discussions between the Local Optometric Committee, Local Pharmaceutical Committee and NHS Sheffield, from 1 October 2011 Primary Eye care Acute Referrals Scheme (PEARS) Optometrists will be able to advise their PEARS patients with minor eye conditions to visit any community pharmacy in Sheffield to receive medication.

Patients who are exempt from NHS charges, listed below, will be entitled to a supply of medication funded by the NHS without the need for a prescription, or a further visit to their GP.
• Patients aged 60 or over
• Patients under 16
• Patients aged 16, 17 or 18 and in full time education
• Patients with a valid War Pension exemption certificate
• Patients claiming Income Support
• Patients claiming Income-Based Job Seekers Allowance
• Holds a valid Maternity Exemption Certificate
• Patient is named on a current HC2 charges certificate
• Patient has a valid Medical Exemption certificate
• Patient entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS Tax Credit Exemption certificate
• Has a valid Prescription Prepayment certificate
• Claims Pension Credit guarantee credit / has a partner who gets Pension Credit guarantee credit

The medication will be supplied under the Sheffield Community Pharmacist Service to Treat Minor Ailments (Minor Ailments Scheme).

Those patients who are not exempt from NHS charges can still obtain the medication from the Pharmacist but will have to pay the retail cost of the item.

It is possible for the pharmacist to supply only one course of drops to patients under the MAS. Where longer term treatment is likely (e.g the treatment of dry eye) the patient can ask their GP to put the drops on a repeat prescription.

You are of course free to recommend any products you feel appropriate but only those products listed can be supplied under the MAS-PEARS scheme. Consideration will be given to a broader range of medications following a review in 2012.
